HR News from The Source Major Recordkeeping Changes on the Way Three million workers were injured on the job in 2012, prompting OSHA to propose a new rule to improve the tracking of workplace injuries and illnesses. OSHA’s proposed rule includes major changes to the way employers submit their workers’ injury and illness data. Employers with more than 250 employees would be required to electronically submit their injury and illness logs to OSHA on a quarterly basis. Employers with 20 or more employees in certain industries with high injury and illness rates would be required to electronically submit this data on an annual basis. Submitting the data electronically will allow OSHA to more easily and quickly post the data online after removing personally identifiable information. Employers will then have the opportunity to compare their safety records with the records of other employers in the same or similar industries, and in real time. Workers will also be able to find out the safety records of potential employers. OSHA hopes the recordkeeping changes will provide employers and employees with easier access to the data and will encourage them to reduce the workplaces hazards that cause injuries, illnesses and fatalities. If you’re interested in giving input on the proposed rule, the public has until Feb. 6, 2014, to submit comments.
